My new commute

It's only been one week, but I'm liking this bike commute more than I ever imagined I might. Even in the rain, it's not bad at all. So far, at least.

I'm riding in the morning the roughly three miles to the MAX station, where I can catch a train downtown and then ride my bike the five or so blocks to work. Most evenings, especially when I get off late, I do the same on my return trip home.

Friday, though, was a beautiful day and I got off around 5:30 so I biked the whole way home. I hope to do that more in the evenings this summer and into the fall, at least. I imagined it would be a great way to unwind at the end of a long day and indeed it is. It's about 11 miles in the car, so maybe slightly longer with the twist and turns of the bike route. Minus one hill that kicks my ass, I love it. And I made better time biking straight through than I would had I taken the train most of the way, as I do most days.

Morning or afternoon, there's a certain satisfaction that comes from seeing that you're going faster on a bike than cars stuck in rush hour on the interstate are.

Plus, it's cheaper and healthier, too. All the better for when we have the baby this fall. Nice to know I'm getting to work in a more sustainable way and taking better care of myself at the same time.
